Digital Art

A Pacific Crest Institute course.

Digital Art is a sixteen-week studio course in digital drawing, color, and comic-art production, taught in person with the software and workflows that working professionals use. Students work in Clip Studio Paint on their own tablet computers, drawing directly on the screen with a pressure-sensitive pen and using a keyboard for shortcuts. The course opens with drawing fundamentals (construction, silhouette reading, and perspective) and with the behavior of light and the structure of color, then applies both inside a complete production pipeline.

That pipeline is the spine of the course. Students take a scanned page from raw file to print-ready art: setting up a correctly sized document and binarizing the line art; building the panels, borders, and gutters; separating lettering onto its own layers; repairing the line art at working zoom so that every shape closes; building a separation layer that gives each depth plane its own value; flatting the base colors; then color holds, shadows, highlights, specular, and grain; and finally print preparation. Work is kept in an organized, non-destructive layer stack, and files are assessed as files, not only as flattened images.

The later units treat color as storytelling rather than decoration. Students learn to commit to a light source and let the rest of a scene fall away; to cool an entire palette so that a night scene reads as night; to separate a cold present from a warm remembered past by temperature alone, without a caption; to reserve one bright accent for the object the story depends on; and to hold that continuity across a sequence of panels. Students finish the term with a portfolio of completed, high-resolution pieces and a finished page prepared to publication specification. No AI image generation is used in the course.

Hardware
Provided by the student. A tablet computer that the student draws on directly, with a keyboard and a pressure-sensitive pen, is required. A regular laptop, such as a MacBook, used with a drawing tablet that has no screen of its own is not a substitute. Recommended: Microsoft Surface Pro 13-inch (11th Edition or newer), with at least 16 GB of RAM; or Apple iPad Pro 13-inch (M5 chip or newer) or iPad Air 13-inch (M4 chip or newer), with at least 12 GB of RAM. What students learn

On completion of the course, students can:

  1. 1.Construct figures, creatures, and environments from basic volumes, and carry a drawing from rough construction to clean, closed line art.

  2. 2.Design and control a value structure and a deliberate palette so that a piece reads clearly at a glance, and render form, material, and light convincingly.

  3. 3.Build and maintain a non-destructive, professionally organized layered file in Clip Studio Paint, using the full production layer stack.

  4. 4.Execute the professional comic-color production pipeline end to end: page setup, lettering separation, line-art repair, separation, flatting, color holds, rendering, and print preparation.

  5. 5.Use color, light, and palette to carry narrative: key emotion, establish time and place, direct the reader’s eye, and hold continuity across a sequence of panels.

  6. 6.Evaluate their own work and the work of others against stated criteria, and revise work in response to critique.

  7. 7.Prepare finished files to professional print specification (bleed, trim, resolution, and color) and present a finished page in the format a publisher requires.

  8. 8.Select, sequence, and present a portfolio of finished work for college and art-school review, documenting the development of each piece from early idea to finished art.

Outcomes are aligned to the California Arts Standards for Public Schools (2019), Media Arts and Visual Arts, high school Proficient and Accomplished levels, across the four artistic processes: Creating, Producing and Presenting, Responding, and Connecting.

How to read the standards references

Each outcome names the standards it is aligned to in words, followed by the official code. A code such as Prof.VA:Cr1.1 reads in four parts:

Course units

01

Drawing and lineart fundamentals

Topics. Gesture and construction, human and creature anatomy, shape language and silhouette reading, perspective (one-, two-, and three-point), and staging a scene in space.

What you practice. Construct figures and forms from simple volumes; Read and design a clear silhouette; Draw believable space in perspective.

By the end. Take an idea from rough construction to clean, confident lineart.

Techniques taught

  • Timed gesture studies built from a line of action
  • Construction from primitive volumes (box, cylinder, sphere) into figure and creature forms
  • Silhouette tests: fill a drawing to solid black and check whether the pose still reads
  • One-, two-, and three-point perspective grids, with horizon and eye level placed on purpose
  • Placing figures on a ground plane at consistent scale inside a perspective grid
  • Thumbnailing a staged scene small before committing to it at full size
  • Tightening a rough into clean, closed line art, working at 300 to 1100 percent and checking back at page size
  • Line weight control: heavier contour, lighter interior detail, capped line ends

Key assignments

  1. 1.Gesture and construction set. A set of timed gesture pages plus constructed figure and creature studies, submitted digitally with the construction still visible underneath.
  2. 2.Perspective environment. An interior or exterior drawn on a two- or three-point grid, with at least one figure correctly scaled on the ground plane.
  3. 3.Clean line-art piece. One staged scene taken from thumbnail through rough construction to finished, closed line art on its own layer.

Assessment

Studies are checked for completeness and for evidence of construction underneath the finish; roughs are submitted with every finished piece. The perspective environment and the clean line-art piece are scored against a posted rubric covering construction accuracy, silhouette readability, perspective correctness, and line quality. Both pieces are reviewed in studio critique before final submission.

Light and color

Topics. How light behaves (key, fill, rim, and ambient light), the shadow family (form, core, cast, and occlusion), falloff and material response, and color theory across value, saturation, and hue.

What you practice. Control a value structure so a piece reads at a glance; Render form and surface convincingly; Build a palette on purpose instead of by guesswork.

By the end. Light a subject convincingly and hold a controlled value structure.

Techniques taught

  • Building a greyscale value study before any hue is chosen
  • Committing to a key light, then identifying the fill, rim, and ambient contribution
  • Rendering the full shadow family: form shadow, core shadow, cast shadow, and occlusion
  • Controlling falloff and terminator softness according to surface type
  • Material response studies across matte, metal, skin, fur, fabric, and glass
  • Mixing a palette deliberately along value, saturation, and hue rather than sampling at random
  • Checking a piece at thumbnail size and in greyscale to confirm the value structure still reads
  • Shifting a full palette from local color to a single committed light condition

Key assignments

  1. 1.Value study set. One subject rendered three times under three different lighting setups, in greyscale only.
  2. 2.Material study sheet. A row of simple forms in distinct materials under one committed key light.
  3. 3.Full-color render. A single figure or object lit and rendered in color, submitted together with the greyscale value study that preceded it.

Assessment

Each piece is scored on a posted rubric for value structure (does it read at thumbnail size and in greyscale), light-source consistency, shadow-family accuracy, material differentiation, and palette intent. Students submit the greyscale stage alongside the color finish, so that the process is assessed and not only the result.

Software and digital production

Topics. The professional pipeline in Clip Studio Paint: selections, masks, adjustment layers, layer modes, brush economy, file setup, and non-destructive workflows.

What you practice. Keep an organized, non-destructive layered file; Flat, mask, and adjust without repainting; Set up a document that is safe for print.

By the end. Produce a clean, well-organized file that a professional could pick up and continue.

Techniques taught

  • Page setup. Start a correctly sized document, import a scan at the right scale, binarize the line art to pure black on white, and add the PAPER layer underneath.
  • Panels, borders, and gutters. Rectangle-select and fill each panel a distinct flat color on PANELS, draw the BORDERS, and fill the GUTTERS, so that nothing leaks between panels later.
  • Lettering separation. Lasso-select balloons and captions on the inks and verify the whole selection with Quick Mask; cut, paste, and merge onto LETTERS; use Auto Select, Fill, and Expand Selection (10 px) to lift a sound effect with its outline intact; fill balloons and caption boxes on BALLOONS.
  • Line-art repair. At 300 to 1100 percent, close breaks with Lasso fill at 100 percent opacity and anti-aliasing off; cap open line ends with a thicker G-pen; redraw ruled lines with the Straight line tool; solo the locked original scan to see how a line really closed; redraw art that was hidden under a balloon; clear the dust that binarizing left behind.
  • Separation layer. Duplicate PANELS into SEPARATION and merge; lasso-fill each overlapping depth plane a distinct value; set Auto Select to refer to the editing layer only, and use Quick Mask, so that a fill can never spill onto an already separated shape.
  • Flatting. Start FLATS as a copy of SEPARATION; Auto Select with connected pixels off and tolerance 0 to grab a whole character in one click; keep the selection live and lasso-fill fast, loose shapes that clip to the silhouette; bucket-fill small enclosed shapes; work biggest area first, then skin, eyes, gloves, clothing, and shoes; sample exact character colors from a reference page open in a second tab.
  • Layer discipline. Masks, adjustment layers, layer modes, brush economy, and consistent naming across the full production stack: LETTERING (LETTERS, BALLOONS), BORDERS & GUTTERS, GRAIN, SPECULAR, HOLDS, INKS, HIGHLIGHTS, SHADOWS, FLATS, SEPARATION, PANELS, PAPER.
  • Print-safe setup. Resolution, bleed, trim, and color mode settled before the work begins, not after.

Key assignments

  1. 1.Page build. Take a supplied scan from raw file to a fully set-up page: correctly sized document, binarized inks, PAPER, PANELS in distinct colors, BORDERS, and GUTTERS. Each layer is soloed to prove it is clean and gap-free.
  2. 2.Prep pass. On the same page, separate the lettering onto LETTERS and BALLOONS and complete the line-art repair pass, submitted with before-and-after details captured at working zoom.
  3. 3.Separation and flats. Build the SEPARATION layer, then deliver finished FLATS for every character and plane on the page, with colors matched to a supplied reference.

Assessment

This unit is assessed on the working file, not on a flattened image. Students submit the layered source file. The instructor checks the layer structure and naming against the production stack, solos each layer to find gaps and leftover dust, and checks the flats for leaks, unflatted pixels, and color match to the reference. The standard is a file that a professional could open and continue.

Narrative production

Topics. Storytelling with color: color scripting, atmosphere and mood, emotional keying, and continuity across a sequence, moving from coloring single images to deliberate visual narrative.

What you practice. Script the mood and color of a scene; Key emotion through light and palette; Hold continuity across a sequence of panels.

By the end. Build a short color-scripted sequence that carries emotion and reads clearly.

Techniques taught

  • Color scripting a sequence. Assign every beat its palette before any panel is rendered.
  • Keying the hour. Re-key a scene from daytime local color to night by cooling the whole palette, on the principle that red is not red by moonlight.
  • Directing the eye. Subordinate detail that competes with the story: tone down stars that a reader mistakes for snow, and lengthen a shooting star’s tail when the story hangs on it.
  • Temperature as tense. Color a cold blue present against warm sepia memory, so that the reader knows past from present without a caption.
  • One committed light source per scene. Light the faces and the objects that matter from a single source, and let the rest fall into darkness.
  • Reserved accent. Hold one bright flash for the story’s key object, and set a golden memory against smoky ruins.
  • Continuity across panels. Keep character and environment color consistent while the light changes from panel to panel.
  • Recoloring as interpretation. Treat new color over existing line art as new color art with its own intent, not as a correction of the original colorist’s work.

Key assignments

  1. 1.Color script. A set of small color keys for a short sequence, one per beat, each with a written note stating what the key is doing for the story.
  2. 2.Re-key study. Take a page or panel set already flatted in local color and re-key it to a different hour or emotional register. Submitted as a before-and-after pair with a short written rationale.
  3. 3.Sequence render. Three to five consecutive panels rendered to finish, holding continuity of light, palette, and character color across the whole sequence.

Assessment

Scored on a posted rubric for narrative legibility (can a reader who has not read the script tell what changed and why), light-source consistency across panels, palette intent, and continuity. The written rationale is graded with the image: students are expected to be able to say what each color choice does for the story.

Portfolio and finishing

Topics. Finishing work to a professional standard: the inks, flats, holds, and rendering progression; page proofing; print prep; and assembling a body of work for college and art-school review.

What you practice. Finish a piece through the full production progression; Prep files for print with correct bleed, trim, and color; Assemble and present a portfolio.

By the end. Leave with finished, high-resolution pieces ready for review.

Techniques taught

  • Color holds. Recolor the line art itself where the story asks for it, instead of leaving every line black.
  • The rendering pass, in order. SHADOWS, then HIGHLIGHTS, then SPECULAR, with selections taken from FLATS so that edges stay clean.
  • Texture and grain. Apply the GRAIN layer last and at a controlled strength.
  • Lettering restored on top. Place the LETTERING folder back above BORDERS & GUTTERS once the art is finished.
  • Page proofing. Check the page at page size and again at print resolution for leaks, halos, and unflatted pixels.
  • Print preparation. Bleed, trim and safe margins, resolution, and color mode; export to a stated delivery specification.
  • Revision as versions. Take a revision pass in response to critique, saved as a new version rather than written over the last one.
  • Portfolio assembly. Select, sequence, and present a body of finished work together with process documentation, for college and art-school review.

Key assignments

  1. 1.Finished page. One page carried through the full progression (inks, flats, holds, shadows, highlights, specular, grain, and lettering) to a print-ready file.
  2. 2.Capstone page. A finished page produced to publication specification and delivered to spec. Pacific Crest Institute invites every student to contribute their page to the hardcover published by Floating Island Productions; the grade is for the work delivered to specification, not for any publication decision.
  3. 3.Portfolio. A curated set of finished pieces from the term, sequenced and presented with process documentation for each piece.

Assessment

The finished page and the capstone page are scored against a posted finishing rubric covering rendering quality, edge control, print-readiness, and delivery to specification, and must pass a print-prep check before final submission. The portfolio is assessed on selection and sequencing, breadth across the term’s units, the quality of the process documentation, and the student’s ability to explain and defend their selections in a final review.

How the studio works

Cohorts are small and taught in person. Each session follows the same shape: a demonstration, then guided practice, then independent studio time. The instructor demonstrates a technique live, at the zoom levels the work is actually done at, and students then repeat the technique on their own file while the instructor circulates. The remainder of the session is independent studio work on the current assignment.

Work continues between sessions. The studies and technique drills, the unit projects, the portfolio pieces, and the capstone page are carried on independently between meetings and submitted for assessment, with the process files required alongside the finished art.

Feedback is individual and continuous. The instructor reviews work at each station during studio time, and every major assignment is discussed in group critique before it is submitted. Students are expected to take a revision pass in response to critique and to submit the revision alongside the original.

Each cohort also includes critiques and workshops with guest professionals who work in comics and illustration today. Students present work in progress, receive a professional critique, and revise against it.

Pacific Crest Institute’s free recorded lesson series, How to Color Comics in Clip Studio Paint, is assigned as reference material that students can re-watch between sessions. The five published lessons cover page setup, lettering separation, line-art repair, the separation layer, and flatting, and they use the same layer stack and the same working methods taught in the studio.

Academic integrity

All work submitted for this course must be the student’s own. AI image generation is not used in the course and is not accepted in submitted work. Where a student colors line art they did not draw, as in the production units, the line art is supplied as course material and the student’s own contribution is the color art.

Work is assessed against posted rubrics, which are given to students before each assignment begins. Process is assessed alongside the result: roughs, greyscale stages, layered source files, and written rationales are submitted with the finished art, and a finished image submitted without its process does not receive full credit.

Materials and technology

Hardware

Students bring a tablet computer that they draw on directly, with a keyboard and a pressure-sensitive pen, to every class. All three are required, not optional: students draw and ink with the pen directly on the screen, keyboard shortcuts are taught and practiced in class, and inked line weight depends on how hard the pen presses. A regular laptop, such as a MacBook, used with a drawing tablet that has no screen of its own is not a substitute. We recommend one of the two setups below.

Recommended option 1

Microsoft Surface Pro, 13-inch, with keyboard and pen

Tablet
Surface Pro 13-inch (11th Edition, released 2024) or newer, such as the Surface Pro 13-inch (12th Edition). The “for Business” versions of these models are also recommended, with the same memory minimum. The 11th Edition may also be labeled “Surface Pro (11th Edition)” or “Surface Pro, Copilot+ PC”.
Memory
At least 16 GB of RAM.
Keyboard
A Surface Pro keyboard that fits the 13-inch model, such as the Surface Pro 13-inch Keyboard or Surface Pro 13-inch Flex Keyboard.
Pen
Surface Slim Pen.

Please note that Microsoft also sells a smaller model, the Surface Pro, 12-inch. It has a smaller screen and uses a different keyboard, so it is not the recommended model. Microsoft sells both sizes on the same Surface Pro page, so check that the model you choose says 13-inch.

Apple iPad, 13-inch, with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro

The Magic Keyboard made for your iPad: Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro 13-inch, or Magic Keyboard for iPad Air 13-inch.
Pen
Apple Pencil Pro. The Apple Pencil (USB-C) also connects to these iPads, but it does not sense pressure, so it is not suitable for this course.

Why a large, recent device. Comic pages in this course are drawn at print resolution, 600 dpi, with more than ten layers on each page. Files that size need a lot of memory, and brush strokes stay smooth only when the processor can keep up with them. Clip Studio Paint also keeps many panels and toolbars open around the canvas, so the largest screen leaves the most room to draw. For those reasons we recommend the 13-inch size and the models listed above.

If your student already has a smaller or older tablet, or another setup where they draw directly on a screen, please contact the instructor, Ethan Alvarée, before buying anything; in many cases an existing device can still work for the course.

Digital Art is a Pacific Crest Institute course. Families who want the course recorded on a high school transcript may request credit from High Bluff Academy, a WASC-accredited private high school in Rancho Santa Fe. Credit is requested from and granted by High Bluff Academy, on High Bluff Academy’s terms. Pacific Crest Institute does not grant high school credit.
